Hi all,
I’m receiving 8 one day old chicks this week. However I’ll be placing them with a broody hen who has been sitting on fertilized eggs that never developed (scrambled ☹️). The day the chicks arrive I’ll be placing them under momma hen in the evening. So they will be without her maybe 6 to 9 hours. Will I need to get them a heating lamp?
Thanks

Not necessarily as long as you can give them a space close to 90F. You can just use a 60 watt incandescent lamp (or similar) in a drop light in a cardboard box. A heat lamp is too hot for a small space.
It would be best if you can give them feed and water while they wait to be given to the hen.
I find it better to insert the chicks after dark. Stick one at a time by her and she should tuck them in. Go back 20 minutes later and look around with a flashlight to make sure they haven't left the nest.
