I have 11 eggs in the incubator (shipped), one of which has an air cell that is much larger than the rest, and saddle shaped. From what I've read there is not much I can do, but thought I would ask anyway. The embryo is very lively and on track with growth. The other eggs all seem to have appropriately sized and shaped cells, so I certainly don't want to raise my humidity and compromise the others. They are on day 13.
Thanks!
Edited: I just wanted to add, I only had 1 detached air cell out of the 14 original eggs, it did not develop. This egg had started with a normal air cell, it was not detached. They were in cartons for the first week or so, they are now all laying on their sides. I know this guy probably needs to be hatched in a carton, I'm just afraid he won't make it that far with the air call being so large.

I wouldn't make any major adjustments. Just hope for the best. Can you candle it to see if there are any tiny cracks? I'm curious how this happens.

Thanks, I've candled it twice now, as well as before I set them, there are no cracks. I've also started rotating them in the incubator, even though it seems that the humidity is fairly even.

Welcome.

I did a Bing search on "egg air cell deformities". I found some pics of a "saddle" shaped air cell. It said it is caused by a detached membrane. The info. suggests it may be OK. Or, it may not.

Just don't use that air cell for size monitoring. I am going to start "seeding" my incubator with a homegrown egg alongside of shipped eggs because of the variations in air cells in shipped eggs. Then I can monitor progress on an egg that will behave predictably.

Thank you both. I think beating your head against the wall is pretty common with shipped eggs:/ Thankfully most of the air cells look good right now, hopefully that continues. Should that one be incubated in a carton the entire time, or will that not help right now?

This is my first, second, and soon to be third experience with shipped eggs so I can't answer that, but I will be awaiting the reply!
