I'm currently building a avairy which will be 12ft long, 6ft wide and about 7-8ft high. The mesh is 1x1 inch. I'm planning to hatch some button quail, are they going to escape through the mesh? :hmm

You need 19g 1/2 inch HWC to predator proof. You need to think about predators that can get in as well as quail escaping.

If the holes are just big enough for the quails to poke their head(or possibly their upper body) through, they will definitely try to wriggle out and get themselves in trouble so you have to make the gaps much smaller. For button quails, 1x1inch seems like a convenient size to get... stuck. Plus you don't want to let those rats in there cuz they prey on button quails..

P.s. I like your profile pic! I have three 7 year old senior piggies myself.

I can tell you from experience that you need 1/2 or 1/4 inch hwc at least around the bottom of your aviary. I like 1/4"

My husband left 1" on the door, the rest is 1/4". Two owls came hunting and I found a headless bird in the aviary the next morning. Just the luck that it ran for that part of the aviary. Lesson learned.

That's just a pair of owls. They can't reach in or undo your locks or dig under. Prepare for the usual predators in your area.
