1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

Welcome! The minimum of 4 sq. ft. is a good guideline, but it is always nice to give them more room if you can!

north missouri i got 18 birds in a 12x12 coop they do good. during the day they free range. winter, they can go out but dont always. unheated. I have to clean coop a little more often.

1 Sq ft per bird is inhumane. I think 4' per bird is a minimum and if possible give them more. If they are too crowded it promotes feather picking and cannibalism. Commercial growers either put them in individual cages or clip their beaks, both of which just ain't right.
