I have a 1 week old baby chick that’s been injured by the older hens in our flock. It’s leg is completely limp all the way up to the hip. Won’t put any pressure on it at all. an the leg just flops around I’ve wrapped it up an tried my best to stabilize it the best I could with popsicle sticks an bandage. Earlier seemed like it had a little appetite. But now doesn’t seem interested. Just wants to lay down an sleep. I have it separated from all other chickens an put it under a heat lamp an have been trying to get It to drink water. Doesn’t seem Interested at all In the water. Just wants to sleep. I feel so bad for it can anyway please tell me how to help it. 😭 my husband recommended putting it down because it just seems like it’s in a lot of pain an we really don’t want it to suffer. I’ve grown very attached to this chick. Her name is mable. PLEASE HELP!😭

Hello! I'm so sorry! Clean the wound with saline and then try to see what the damage looks like and maybe post pictures if you can. I would then put bacitryn spray and triple antibiotic cream. Keep the chick warm and offer sweetened water for shock. I had an injured 5 week cockerel, he was in my arms for almost a whole day before the shock wore off. My older hens scalped him to the bone.

there was luckily were no open wounds, no bleeding nothing like that just it’s poor little leg is limp , very sure its broken at the hip part. It hops around an then just flops over an closes its eyes. Won’t take any water at the moment but will try to get her to take some again in the morning.

That's ok! They heal very fast! Can you dip your finger in the sweetened water and put a drop on it's beak? Only if she's awake though.

Dang big chickens, why in the world would they attack a tiny week old baby 😭

Yes that’s what I’ve been trying! The tiny drops of water on my finger she just seems to get a little spooked even tho she is awake an shakes the water off her beak but I have noticed a couple times it looked like she might have took a little water an a few little pieces of feed. She is asleep at the moment under her heat lamp in a little fuzzy blanket I gave her, since she doesn’t have her momma anymore wanted to give her something fuzzy to lay on… I will continue to work with her in the morning on the drinking her sweet water. I just really hope she heals quick an gets better soon she was such a sweet chick😭 I don’t understand why the older ones do that either! Another problem Tho is she doesn’t want to hold still an wants to hop around an flop over a lot im afraid she’s gonna end up hurting herself more. Also afraid what if it’s popped out at the hip? Would it still be able to heal by itself?? Her tiny bones are so fragile I’m afraid to even try if it was popped out!

Here's a thread that has a link to how to splint a broken leg on the hip

😢 Ugh, what I would do is feel the healthy leg and then gently feel the broken leg. You may feel a knot where the leg is broken, that's ok, that's how the body heals.

Splint it and if she's too active you may need to immobilize her in a smaller space for a few days.
Thanks for the link I will be reading this an re-splinting her leg tomorrow. An I will also be checking if I can feel where the the break is. I tried earlier but honestly couldn’t tell any difference except went I got to the hip she seemed to start freaking out an peeping loudly an I didn’t want to stress her out so I just splinted her the best I could an let her rest!

Yes it's going to hurt, when you re-splint her you'll have to push through the peeping and make sure you splint it well.

When my bigs scalped my cockerel my hubs held him and I cleaned the chick, I had to lift the flap on his skull and clean there too. He screamed, but if I hadn't cleaned it he could have gotten a horrible infection. I felt sick doing it but it's for the best and it's temporary. Hugs to you!

How's the chick doing?
I’ve been working with her this past week, made sure she had that sugar water the first few days an made sure she was eating an cuddled her until she come outta the shock, I re-splinted her leg, it’s been about week or so since she was hurt an she’s already putting pressure back on her leg, an wanting to walk on it an wanting to use her hurt leg to scratch her food. Was wondering when you think I should remove the split completely off her an let her walk on her leg without it?
