1 week old baby kittens infested badly with fleas "UPDATE WITH PICS"

Are you positive that the shelter won't take these kittens? It doesn't sound like you have a lot of kitten experience, maybe you should consider giving them to someone who does. Of course, when is a better time to get experience... Could you post a picture of the kittens? Maybe that would help determine their age, as you don't sound to sure.

That's too bad. : ( Hey, with some of the barn kittens we've tamed, eyes will sometimes open one at a time, or take a few days longer. I myself haven't had much experience with raising cats, my only advice to this topic is that if the kittens' gums are a pale color, they could be anemic. Aka, have low blood iron from the amount of blood lost from parasites. And that when there is one problem due to neglect, there is often more, such as worms, infection, or poor nutrition.

I grew up on a farm, and for whatever reason ppl liked to dump their unwanted dogs and cats off at our place. I feel for you for wanting to save these kittens, just don't beat yourself up if they don't make it. Good luck!

How old are these kittens? Your post says 1 week, but then you are talking about matted eyes? Which would , I assume, mean the eyes are open, which means they are at least 10 days old..... If they are only a week old, you need to get the fleas off of them, they will die from anemia. You need to bottle feed them every 2-4 hours. This is a HUGE responsibility , take it from someone who has bottle fed kittens and puppies for years, when I had to. You need to find someone with experience to take them in for them to have a chance. People here are willing to help, but first you need to know approximately how old they are. If they truly are just a week or two old, they are not going to be able to feed themselves. They need to be kept warm.

A very easy, very safe way to kill fleas on ANY AGE of kitten is food-grade DIATOMACEOUS EARTH. Garden & feed stores sometimes carry it. You'd only need maybe 3 oz, & it'd probly cost $5-13 for 1 lb. (That's usually the smallest size you can find). D.E. is a powder that feels like baby powder that you would just sprinkle on the kittens and gently rub all over them.

Be sure to get FOOD-GRADE D.E. It is all-natural & kills pretty much ALL INSECTS with which it comes into contact (You can use it to get rid of mites & lice on chickens, too). It scratches the skin & exoskeletons of insects & causes them to dehydrate & die. However, D.E. feels soft to human & animal skin--it only really scratches extremely tiny critters.

If you can't find any D.E. locally, email me your mailing address & I can mail you enough to treat your kitties for free. However, it might not get there in time since no mail goes out tomorrow 'cause it's Memorial Day, & I'd be sending from Utah & it could take a number of days in the mail.

To keep the kitties warm easily, you can hang a heat lamp (like you use for baby chicks) or just a regular shop light (Sold at Wal-Mart for about $5) a few inches above them with just a normal 60-watt light bulb in it. Be sure to securely attach the lamp to something solid so it can't fall down or get tipped over. Using string to secure it well to a sturdy chair can work well. Be sure the light is not too close to something flammable.

To clear up pink-eye in cats, you can use Neosporin or a generic triple antibiotic ointment (These are sold in grocery stores or Wal-Mart for $2-6). (Be sure to get one that DOES NOT say "With Pain Relief" in the name). There is a post about how to use it at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070717110608AAzMI3J

I have bathed them and i have been bottle feeding them and i put a towel in the dog crate for them to sleep on and a makeshift litter box which 2 of them are using and i put baby powder on them to help with the fleas and their bellys are nice and fat now with me bottle feeding them i feed them a whole bottle or half a bottle depends on how hungry they are i put them back inside they groomed themselfs and take a nap so they are doing nicely now

Do you have pics? I think your age guesstimate is way off if they are using the litter box, I'd guess several weeks.

yeah they are over a week i got online and they are about 3 or 4 weeks old cause it said around that age the ears are up and they have teeth and the eyes are open they have all that all but the black one im calling the shelter and vet clinic tomorrow cause her matted eye its swollen i noticed it today and i think she needs to get something stronger than warm water on it with me cleaning it cause she needs to open that eye or she will go blind in it from not using it i think
