I decided to start a new thread, everyone is buying chicks, hatching eggs and I'm sure most could use some advice.

My situation: Hatched a batch in the bator 4 1/2 weeks ago. 5 chicks. One started panting, lethargic, wouldn't eat or drink much without encouragement. Died 2 days later. I didn't separate from the rest and the rest are fine after more than 3 weeks.

8 days ago, hatched another batch. Using a different brooder. 6 chicks. Two days ago, one started panting (exactly like the first batch), lethargic, wouldn't eat or drink very much. Today, two more started showing the same symptoms. First one died about an hour ago.

I suspect cocci, are there any other thoughts out there? There is no blood in stool and I have been feeding a non-medicated starter feed, water containing electrolytes and probiotics. I change bedding at least once per day, clean feeders at least once per day (more often if they poop in it) and change the water daily.

My treatment plan: milk purge, medicated feed (after the milk purge), one waterer with corid, one waterer with duramycin. After milk purge will put back on medicated starter feed. I'm currently forcing medicated water on those that are not taking water on their own.

I have a large batch hatching in about 12 days, so I really need to get this under control before that hatch. Any comments, suggestions are appreciated.

I'm thinking its something to do with what u have them in..... Hope you figure t out before any more chicks die!
Two completely different brooders for the two hatches. They were only 3 weeks apart, so I knew that I would need another brooder and prepared appropriately. New waterer, new feeder. Nothing that was in the first brooder is in the second one.

Then I have no clue!
Yeah, I don't either. Seems that something is working, one of the sick ones is completely well today and one of the sick ones doesn't look like they will make it. One died yesterday, so it looks like I'll lose one out of this batch.

Separate them! At least that way it won't spread. Out them in separate containers too. Make sure it's open top or its ventilated well.

That is a good idea, I can actually separate the ones that are sick from the well ones today. I'll have to wait until tomorrow for individual containers though....don't have enough containers, feeders or waterers to set up 6 different brood pens. Just got back from jury duty (what timing), and can't get back into the feed store as they closed 10 minutes ago. Just keep hopin'.....

[/quote. Use wire fencing and make individual pens. Then teach the chicks how to drink from a normal bowl by dipping their beaks in it. Then make a make-shift feeder from a jar's lid. This should be a temporary solution.
