I am not sure based on what you described, and I am fairly new to this too, but have you looked into Mareks disease? Sounds similar with the possible paralysis. It is a virus and is contagious to the rest of the flock (not to freak you out), but you might want to do some research on that and see if it fits. Hope that helps.
