10/9 UPDATE #29 .....4 week old chick injured Graphic pic

shoot, we are still having problems with her. each day the bandage is full of oozing blood clots.
Right now I just rewrapped it and by the time I got her back to the coop her bandage was soaked and blood running down her leg

this time /I had put quick stop on it and it is still bleeding!
how can I stop the bleeding?

Thanks purpletree I think I got it to stop bleeding for now anyways. I had to unwrap it then I rinsed under running water then reaplied the quick stop and bandaged with neosporin .

The clots are coming out when I unwrap the bandage which was once a day and each day she has clotted blood oozing out all over her leg up to her belly. I'm afraid she'll slowly bleed to death

She is eating drinking and running about just fine. If it wasn't for the blood running down her leg each day I couldn't tell her from the others

Go the the pharmacy and by a bandage called Telfa or its generic equivalant. It is an absorbable bandage that will not stick to wounds. The next time you change the bandage do 1 of 2 things.

1 If it is bleeding rinse it gently in warm running water with a gentle soap and rinse gently. Pat dry. If the wound is bleeding use your finger to hold a small folded piece of Telfa on the wound until it clots. No more blood clotting powder. No peeking. Let his blood do what it is supposed to do and form a clot or at least stop the flow of blood. Cover the wound with neosporin (the kind without pain relief) and cover with a folded piece of Telfa. Cover the Telfa with absorbant gauze and then wrap with vet wrap. The vet wrap will only stick to it's self and not the feathers or the bandage.

2 If it is not bleeding gently apply neosporin and the folded Telfa and the gauze and finish with vet wrap.

I think the problem you are having is that the clot is sticking to whatever you are bandaging it with and you can't remove the bandage without removing the clot. Go around his leg a few times so he won't be able to peck at the wound.

If you can't get the bleeding under control go ahead and use the blood stop powder and wrap as above. We use Telfa all the time in the operating room and it's fantastic and the neosporin only makes it more non stick.

Best of luck. I know he'll be fine.

P.S. Just clean with soap and water 1 time. Don't use peroxide or betadine. They can be used the first time you treat an injury but after that they can actually kill the skin cells that are trying to close the wound.

I know you're worried but she will be alright. You're taking care of her the best way you know how and that's the best you can do.

A little secret..........I'd feel the same way and set the alarm clock to check on her every 15 minutes. There are a lot of us like that on this forum. Were all crazy about our fuzzy butts. My husband caught the fever too. Before we go to sleep tonight he'll ask me 'if the girls are warm enough'.

I wish my DH would catch the fever, some days I think he is he'll talk with them and want to give them treats. He never has been a animal person but he knows I love them

OK today's update.
Gave her the poli vi sol. When I took off the bandage it wasn't as bad as before. The pictures aren't the best. There is a scab which looks to be composed of the quick stop yet it was still bleeding from under that. I applied pressure for several minuets and it still wouldn't stop dripping so I put more quick stop and bandaged it up again with neosporin. So far I don't see and seepage through the bandage.
Thanks so much for your help and support

She is a beauty. Nice and bright eyes and looks healthy.

I can't understand why she is still bleeding. Keep going with the vitamins. She might have a deficiency that causes her blood not to clot normally.

How often are you changing the bandage? Maybe try skipping a day and see if the clot is able to hold without being disturbed by removing the bandage. I see the can of blu kote if you are using that stop for a few days. No one can pick at the wound if it is bandaged and covered with vet wrap. Maybe somehow the products you are using are interacting with each other in a bad way.

Is the clot sticking to the Telfa? I'm wondering if the quick stop is to blame. Try another product called blood stop. They might be the same exact ingredients...who knows. I'm just grasping at straws here. Something is not right and it's probably right under our noses.

You aren't rinsing her leg every time you bandage it are you? I'm not trying to make you sound incompetent I just want to ask a lot of questions.

Are her leg feathers getting into the wound. Are they drying in it. Next time you bandage her trim the feathers back a bit with a small pair of scissors to keep the feathers out.

I'm so frustrated! Keep us posted.

Can chickens be given Vitamin K to help the blood clot? I know that's what you'd do with some other animal species if they were having clotting problems...

Me too

So far today the bandage seems to be holding good and I don't see any blood. I'll try to not change it till tomorrow and see how she is.
I'll stop the blue kote and just use the neosporin.

Thanks so much
Have a great day
Rhonda
