10 Baby Wood Ducks (1st thought they were Mallards)

Like much of the US, we're in a year-round area for wood ducks. Many come down from Canada and spend winters here.

You'll have to give me tips on how to do this in the winter. Right now, I have a hose and a bucket, and my fig tree is loving the day-old duck water that I splash at its roots.

Oh okay so they aren't like Mallards or geese that migrate. We have wood ducks and the high school put up houses along the river but I am not sure any have ever been used.

I was told the same about the wood duck nests put up around here. Not used.

But that awesome duckumentary on PBS shows they love nesting very high in trees those little things jumped 30' into cushioned leaves. I wish we'd see more around here they must be pretty secretive.

I use heated buckets in winter and mine only get a tub like you have for bathing when it get above freezing and I dump before dark My chickens drink out of heated buckets too.

They're VERY secretive. The second something is not right -- a noise, a movement -- they take off. The 2 guys that take wildlife photos have to sneak up and sit quietly for hours to try to get WD pics.

Probably a stupid question -- heated buckets? Heating units embedded into bucket, or separate heating element?

I guess they have to be since they are prey not only to 4 legged critters but to 2 legged also.
