10 month old chicken with gapeworm

I would go ahead and let the vet treat with metronidazole. It is more important to treat this disease that not. You can toss eggs for month or just not eat her eggs. The plaques in the back of the throat may be a protozoa, not fungus, called canker or trichomoniasis. In the US, we can buy metronidazole online as Fish Zole. Dosage is 250 mg daily for 5-6 days.

The vet showed me the spot she was looking at, it looks nothing like the pictures in the first article. Hers currently is a small speck at the back of her throat. She goes back in 7 days. I will push for the metronidazole if it has changed. If she won't prescribe then I'll go another route. Thanks for the help!

There can be fungus infections in the throat as well, but canker is common, and it responds to metronidazole, which makes me think that is what she thinks it is. You can look inside her beak with a light to see if it has grown. Canker smells rotten apparently, though I haven’t seen it before.

Fish Zole is a tablet. Here is where it can be ordered, and the dosage is 250 mg daily for 5-6 days for a 5 pound chicken:

At her last visit the suspicious"spot" was gone. Negative for gapeworm. She had excessive gram negative bacteria when the vet did a culture and some fungus. Started antibiotic therapy. Was going to start antifungal treatment tomorrow. I'm sad to report that she died in our arms this evening. It was like something was caught in her throat. I thought several months ago I felt something like a lump in her neck. IDK, but maybe she had cancer. Before she passed tonight I felt it and it felt bigger. She seemed to have more and more trouble swallowing. She was a sweet girl and she will be missed. I have learned a lot from this journey if nothing else.
