10 week old chick stuck in feeder!

I use a 7lb. plastic feeder, and my solution to the problem was to make a top for it by using an ice cream bucket lid. It works wonderfully, and also helps keep the feed from getting wet from the rain.

You know those metal circular ones with the round holes cut into them? I had a chick climb through one of the holes and get stuck once. He was very frustrated when I found him, not hurt, but mad as heck!
I was shocked when this happened to our chicks. I knew some were missing & was shocked when I found them dead, days later, in the round neck entrances of our 50lb feeder. They suffocated. It nearly happened again, this week, but fortunately, the feeder was low. One chick was sitting in the center & the other one was stuck in the curve of the pipe. It's quite horrifying.

If you use no feeder there are some costs and risks and if you use feeders there is some costs and risks. Choose your poison.

I have an 11# version and same, ice cream bucket lid with a small hole cut for the hanging loop to pass through. I only bother using the lid when I have chicks in the mix as the feeder is indoors but it can be literally a life saver for the small ones.

I've lost two babies stuck in the feeders😭 couldn't figure out how they are getting in but after reading this I know now to cover the top. I'm devastated, I tried to hold mine put them under light but they still didn't make it.
