Is that normal? This critter crows like every 5 minutes from just before dawn til just after dark. Out of 4 males he is the only one making any noise at all...he is definitely the boss the way he herds everyone around but he wont shut up. If I get rid of him will one of the other males step into his place?

Oh goody goody goody! Love to hear roos crow. I have 6 that are just over 10 weeks, no crow yet, hope it's soon....

If you only have one roo you are less likely to hear a lot of crowing. He is probably telling the other roos that he is #1. Of course there will always be a #1. Probably you could get rid of the others just as well, and he would calm down.

Well I only bought one roo on purpose...a Cochin because I understand they have a nice temperament and I have little kids (yes Ill watch every roo carefully) but I got 3 surprise boys...2 EE and one Welsummer. The Cochin is a very mellow fellow and the girls like to hang out near him but not with the boss-cause he is so bossy. Only one girl who is very bossy herself likes him. He is very pretty but he may have to get a new home or freezer camp or something.

My EE has always been an only rooster, and was equally obnoxious with the crowing, so maybe it's the breed? But the good news is he mellowed out after he turned 4, and I hardly notice him crowing anymore, so if you're willing to wait that long on your little guy....

Well, no, not entirely. He was really clingy as a baby but got bratty later on. He never uses his spurs but he does bite and draws blood. I used to be terrified of him, but then I looked at it rationally and realized that every time he had bitten me, I had sort of deserved it--sitting too close to his girls when they were freeranging, or making sudden moves in the coop and scaring him. So I used one of those tutorials and tried to be alpha rooster with him--carried him around a lot, held him down in front of the girls, and whenever he makes a move at me I flap my arms against my chest. Now we have an understanding and avoid each other--when he sees me coming to the coop, he goes out into the run and stays out there. When he is in the coop, he'll let me pet him, as long as he's looking the other way at the time, so he can pretend not to notice. I think his improved behavior is partly my attitude, and partly his hormones mellowing out. (He's 6 now.)

Assuming my roo is typical of EEs, if you're willing to work with him, you can get along, but if you're limited on the number of roosters you can have he wouldn't be my first choice. On the plus side, he did used to be really good about herding the girls when they were freeranging, but he got lazy after a few years and didn't bother anymore.
