Salmon Faverolle Bantams

Since this forum is still empty and I am very interested in and would like to share my interest in Salmon Faverolles, I thought I would post a picture of this very endearing breed. In this shot the little hens face fluff is not as noticeable but they have very fluffy muffs. At night in the cold they pull their heads down and the fluff covers them so the cold is no problem.

I have also fallen for this breed. It just so happens that it is Jaynie's fault too. I have hatched eggs from her beautiful birds and can't wait to get some more from her. I also have some bantam salmon favorelle eggs from Catalpa Farms in the incubator too. They sure are sweet!

I am with you two as much as I like the silkies this breed is just great. I have a two year old Rooster who is so gentle and sweet - and I love the sex-linked chicks. Downside to silkies how long you have to wait to sex ---- they are also full of personality - and have all the best traits being tufted, feathered legged and 5 toes - I really like these -- and great pics -- How old are they ?

Your birds are so pretty. I especially like how the beard on the male is a contrasting color.

Here is a picture of the BB (Best of Breed) Salmon Faverolles from the Gold Coast Show in Hollister, CA last Saturday. It was a small show so Im not sure how many other Faverolles it competed against, but it also won Reserve Continental class.

Are your strains hardy? I have heard grumblings about different strains not being very healthy. I, too think they are gorgeous birds, and am wanting to start a flock of them this year. I just cannot decide which color(s) and which size(s). Are the bantams tiny? How about their eggs? Are they tiny eggs, or are they closer to normal size?

The bantams are not much smaller than Polish Standards, or some of the larger Silkies. The eggs are medium in size. Mine are the most healthy birds I have had so far. The only thing I have noticed is that my Faverolles got pasty butt more than the others that hatched with them. That was over in 2 - 3 days. They are little piggies tho so you have to be careful of over feeding. They are unflappable. They don't care about new commers which is nice and the little babies that escape under the chain link are always safe with them. My Rooster is the best most gentle chicken I own. I can do anything with him. He is funny to watch strut and he chases the doves and other wild birds from my yard. They are personality plus. Mine are laying about 2 out of three days right now. I hatched the pictured birds in the fall of 2005. I have one pullet that was hatched last summer. I think they really are a well kept secret in the chicken fancy.

I also have a RIR/Faverolle cross and she took the coloring of the Female Faverolle but the personality of the RIR, She is bossy, loud and nosey. I will probably find a home for her when I get some othe layeing hens.

Anyway, I am glad I am not alone in my appreciation of this sweet breed.

Anyone else out there with a nice breed that is less known that would like to share with us?

I gathered she was not yours but I appreciate you posting the photo anyway. She really is beautiful and since I don't frequent lots of shows. The ones I have visitied have not had any Faverolles at all, its good to see a winning bird. I always look at Feathersite but you never know for sure if they are what you should be breeding for.

I, too, have raised Salmon Favs, LF and Bantams. They are the real sweeties in the poultry world and most of the time they get picked on bad by other breeds. They do get along with other breeds better than my Black Aussie girl. LOL. They get along with my Amercuana bantam girls.

The eggs I get from my bantam girls are variable from small to medium size. They are about a third smaller than the LF Favs. Terrific egg layers.

I have a flock of Salmon and Black Faverolles that originally came from Mike Stapish. Lovely black birds and sweet personality to boot. Only one Mahogany Fav bantam girl...more coming LOL. The strains are hardy and you as a breeder must cull hot and heavy when you are looking for specific traits, personalities and conformation and most importantly, fifth toe placements.

right now I got some LF Blue and Black Favs in the incubator along with the blue salmon Fav bantams...cant wait to see them hatch and hope to get some blues out of this lot. I am looking forward in getting some white and buff ones.

I have seen pictures of the whites, and though I am not usually fond of white birds, they are stunning. I had no idea they came in Buff color, too.

Okay girls, you talked me into it. I just have to try some of them. I find their fuzzy little cheeks endearing, and I love the colors!!

Another wonderful breed that people don't talk about are Langshans. I just got my first pair, and they are quiet and stately. I love how the rooster is so genteel, for lack of a better word. He doesn't crow much, he stalks around very majestically, and is not flighty. He still doesn't trust me much, as I got him as an adult, but we are getting to know each other.

I hope to get all the colors and both sizes of these wonderful and rare birds. I have read that they eat a tremendous amount - but I haven't noticed that, yet. Of course, the rooster is taller than my knee, so of course he would eat more. My hen is rather short legged, so she isn't as tall. They come in Black, Blue and White, Large Fowl and Bantam. I have a Black LF pair right now. I have a long way to go to collect them all, as I haven't been able to find very many breeders, and no breeders of White Bantams. But, I am looking!!
