But thanks I will be getting ready for my first chicken harvest when the first 3 fatty's weight reaches 4 lbs we will process them

It's very simple. Just place the pellet in and close it and point and shoot.

So you can't use a pellet gun in your area? WOW!

Meat birds will definitely be a lot on your plate since you are trying to start a family.

How many birds did you process last and how many do you have left. I am trying to decide how many I want to keep and how many will get sold.

All I hear throughout the day is gun fire, lol. We literally don't own a pellet gun though, or even a .22. Should probably look into one, we don't really have any way of dealing with predators.

I've asked this before, I have a very short memory, do you still bleed them out after shooting them?

What kinda neighborhood do you live in to hear gunfire throughout the day? LOL :lau

I may be able to use one, I know I can't use something to hit a predator in my area.. but a pellet gun maybe. I know I could use a paint ball gun. I don't know anything at all about any types of guns.. except maybe a staple gun. Pretty good with a staple gun lol

I had 50 the first time. That was too many. 25 the second time, and that was just right. I may do 25-50 this year, but send them away to be butchered. Maybe. I will need people to pay in advance so I don't have to put all the upfront investment.

When I read your post and read that you said you had 50 for the first time, I thought you meant you had 50 guns. :lau

You should be ok with a pellet gun. It packs a big punch.

How often do you all the broilers?

Well, I didn't do 43. I only did 39 by myself. I was a little upset at my so called help but I sucked it up and took one for the team.

4 lbs is a great weight!

Last night was the night that I packed the broilers up and put in the freezer. I am OFFICIALLY DONE with the broilers. I have sold everything that I am going to sell and the rest are mine mine mine. I didn't want to sell too many and then end up regretting selling too many. I am hoping the broilers last me at least a year if not longer.

I have a great stock of the liver, heart and gizzards to make rice dressing or dirty rice as some people call it. :drool

I still want to get 10 of the REAL broilers. The fast growing ones. I want to see if I can process them at 4 weeks old or less than 4lbs. I may keep 1 to see how big it grows as 8 weeks but that's it. I don't want to see another broiler until 2016. :lau

KG, were you able to offset much of the cost of the broilers you kept with the sale of the others? Just curious.

My hubby LOVES dirty rice! Do you have a good recipe?

To be honest, I don't think so because I intentionally didn't sell enough to put money back into my little operation. I am working with the numbers as far as cost of feed, shavings, etc and will put on a spreadsheet and figure out how much money I put into this and how much I sold broilers for and how much I profited, which will not be much if anything. But then again, I will need to take into consideration that I won't have to buy any meat for a very long time.

And yes, I do have a good recipe. Let me find it and I will give it to you.

If there are thrift stores and yard sales near you you can always check them out. I have found several of them for under 6 bucks and have never had a problem with any of them. Have also found the bags and canisters for a couple bucks. Just thought someone might be able to save a little. I always try to keep a spare one on hand. I can keep one in the house to use and then designate one for processing.
