100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

That has been my experience as well. My parents got the big ones, as did we. They do tend to be more tender when they are smaller IMO.

Both taste fabulous. I have a rotisserie and cook up birds for my parents as well for a small fee. Kind of like Costco offers those cheap rotisserie birds, mine end up being over $20 each because they are so large lol. My parents got enough meat to last them a week for lunch sandwiches for 3 people. :) I get free lunches there... I work with my mother, so they kind of paid me to eat my own chicken lol.

I think they are good sizes at around 2.5- 3 pounds. You did good!

Thank you.

I had to chuckle when I read that you get paid to eat your own chicken. LOL :lau

That is an excellent price! Good job!!! I bet the rotisserie bird is delicious!!!

I just had more leftovers. Looks like I will have 2 more meals here. I'll probably have the remaining for lunch and dinner tomorrow. That birds was some good tonight. Mmm Mmm good.

I was looking at the bones and now I"m thinking if I need to keep them and freeze them for stock.

We always make stock out of the bones. We debone everything but the drumsticks and wings before we package, and use all the bones and backs and skin to make a huge batch of broth and make chicken rice soup.. which we sell as well.

KG-- you are one busy woman!! ANd far too kind for your own good-- might be worth setting a new policy. No visitors after 6pm.

We gave up long ago trying to get the family to understand we have animals to feed. After a day of visiting and eating a Holiday dinner together everyne goes home. After an hours plus drive home we still need to feed and water, and do blankets for the horses. Our request for an earlier meal time fell on deaf ears. If dinner isn't scheduled to be served by 2pm we aint comin'!! THat got there attention and mostly the times are 1pm now. THough sometimes it isn't worth the fight over meal times and I just stay home-- then they wonder why I didn't come for the family dinner.

Just came in from the broiler pen and I looked at the broilers that are remaining. I picked several of them up and it ain't lookin' pretty. Over half of them are scrawny with no weight. I really don't think they will gain any more weight. I think from this point on, I will be wasting money and feed trying to fatten them up. I will eye ball and pick out the heaviest birds and process them as soon as I can. For the scrawny ones, I'm thinking meat grinder to have chicken patties. That's all I can see doing with them. Unless I opt for some 1 pounders.

Any grind chicken meat up before? :/

We've used ground chicken meat before, never ground it ourselves though. At least the scrawny ones won't go to waste, they will still make excellent stock, plus any meat left on them.

I have been eyeing a grinder at the local flea market and now I think this is a good reason to go and get it.

And you're right, I can use the bones for stock. This is an even better reason to hurry up this process and put this baby to rest.

You could make chicken nuggets by grinding the meat. Sounds disgusting, but home-made chicken nuggets are AWESOME. My wife makes them with a cauliflower base and some kind of coating.. not sure what, but it's a recipe to trick kids into eating veggies that are fussy..

I'm sorry, I know I'm a grown-up, but I still like chicken nuggets.. we make our own.. baked not deep-fried, but I'm sure that would be good too :)

The scrawny ones may be low on the pecking order and having a hard time competing for food with such a large group?

I love chicken nuggets as well. I like the idea of adding cauliflower. Sounds like a tasty combination.

And you are right about low on the pecking order. I would always see the big ones rushing to the food first and the smaller ones would have to wait to eat. I would try to pick them up and place them near the food so they could eat.

I think I will weigh some of the smaller ones to see what the weights are. They don't even feel like 2 lbs. :(

KG-- I think this would be a good time to add dry feed to their food bowl-- they seem to need more energy and protein than they can consume via FF. I suspect they might be starting to starve as they should be eating huge amts of grain to support the muscle which burns a lot of energy. Can you put out dry free choice? OF course will theyeat it is another concern! lol THeylove the FF. Maybe top dress the dry with FF. . . .
