Ok, ok. I fell for it. I went to TSC for some chick feed and couldn't NOT look into the chirping cattle waterers.

So, I look in. Just glancing. Probrably about 200 chicks... obviously just got the order in that morning. Considering I had roughly 85 chickens and chicks at home, I didn't get all "wow". However, while I chatted with another customer and helped her a bit with the "how to start with chickens" speech... I saw it. A white silkie chick. Now, I have wanted a silkie or two, but I wasn't about to buy one from a hatchery... I would have to get more chicks to fill the order and I'm very undecisive. I can never decide what breed to get "for layers". (No, I don't want "golden comits" or "cherry eggers" - I'm a heritage fan)

Anyways. As you all know... TSC has a 6 minimum rule. I really respect that, and so I snatched up that white silkie and had my friend grab a box for chicks. THIRTY minutes later... I had three boxes of chicks!!! I bought up some that were sickly (I know, I know - big bio security no no) and I bought up some that were just "different". Some were bantams, some were standards. Well, here are the pictures of them. There will be 11 pictures... (I have some that are the same so I just photographed one) I had bought 20 chicks and still have 18. Two of the sickly ones died... but at least I tried. That is more than they were getting at the store. (don't get me started on their very "friendly" employee of the month canidate)

So, here they are... I know what some of them are (or at least I think I do at the moment) Let's number them, and you all post your answers for the breeds!!! FUN!!!

CHICK #1 looks like a standard

CHICK #7 Seems to be standard

CHICK #8 - my favorite one other than the silkie - seems to be standard - black comb, black beak, black legs

CHICK #10 Definately a standard

CHICK #11 Another bantam - feathered legs - not as red as the other one and the beak is much lighter

Alright... test is out... please lay down your pencils when you are finished. No cheating!

Can't wait to find out what they are!

Oh, and this is nit-picky, but when you spell "definite" with two "i"s, that means you spell "definitely" with two "i"s.

Sorry, that's the teacher in me.... http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/definite

Beware the water troughs at the feed store, especially in the spring. They'll suck you in, big time!!! I got sucked in by the guineas today.

Here's my guesses:

1 Buff Orp
4 Red cochin
7 speckled sussex
8 Austrolorp or Jersey Giant
9 Porcelain something...does it have feathered legs?
11 Buff cochin

Have fun with them!

Number 10 COULD be a Golden Cuckoo Maran--- do you happen to know where your TSC gets their chicks from?

If it is, it's a cockeral... my pullet was much darker.

Yeah. I'm the world's worst speller. Well... not even close, really... but still. In my defence... public school bored me to death.

I want to keep the mystery a bit longer... but I'll say this:

Some of you have picked a couple of the chicks out to be exactly what I thought they were too. Chances are we are all right about those... and that is GREAT for me!

PS... I should have said this earlier, but I didn't want to give it away. Number 9 has feathered feet and black skin under the fluff.

I don't know where they get them... if I had asked it wouldn't have helped. We had the BEST employee ever working that day. lol. He cared SO MUCH for those chickens and KNEW everything there was to know about them! (of course, sarcasm) I'll refrain from the story, but I would fire someone like that if I was the manager. Maybe I'll call down there tommarrow. Today is Easter Sunday.

HAPPY EASTER to those who celebrate!
