11 weeks, no eggs

Mine took nearly 4 months off this winter! Some of them have just started laying again.
I got my first egg today. Surprisingly it wasn't from the first hen to finish molting. It was the second to finish, around 3 weeks ago. Today's egg top of pic, and last egg from January 22nd. 20200202_093047_resized.jpg .
The egg from January 22 is from the last hen to molt. Here she is today getting some sun. 20200202_091942_resized.jpg . I am so happy to see my hens starting to lay again. I cooked both eggs for breakfast today.
I add lights at 5 am year round. Sunset yesterday was 5:06. So just over 12 hours of light. GC

I've got 2 three-yo and 3 two-yo hens who have completely stopped laying even though they laid steadily through last winter. I was really concerned, particularly since here in SoCal our winters are mild. Then my husband told me another chicken keeper at work was complaining of the same thing.

This week one of my 3-yos laid again. She's laid 3 eggs now. Now I'm encouraged to think the others will feel the spirit again soon too. Mostly, it's a HUGE relief to think that it isn't illness or worms that are making them incapable of laying.

Our winters may be mild but this one was longer and colder than usual. And if they just wanted a little vacay I guess I can't complain much about that either. It's just good to know they're as healthy as they, otherwise, appeared to be.

Lol. We just do without if our hens don't give us any! Store bought eggs are just ... unacceptable. This year we haven't had to go completely without, though. I think our lowest count was two.

It's funny, isn't it? When you've had the really good eggs it just doesn't make sense to spend $$ on eggs that just aren't as fresh and tasty.

My first to finish her molt started to lay Friday, around 5 weeks after she completed molt.
I got 7 eggs last week :celebrate.
I held out buying eggs at the store. But came close. I put eggs in the cart, but quickly put them back and bought pancake mix instead. 20200120_095412_resized.jpg . Just add water, no egg required. They are delicious, but I got tired of pancakes daily. I'm so happy to have eggs for breakfast again. Two hens laying, can't wait for the others to start. GC
