114 today and we put in a window unit - Now they wont come out!

I agree that the chickens are just afraid of the new sound in the coop and will come around when they realize it wont "get" them. 85 degrees would seem frigid right now, so that should be ok. (maybe will keep your power bill manageable)

Well - I would say they are used to us now! They have not been outside all day! I guess I dont have to worry about baked chicken any more!

I do temps based on the chickens not panting or holding their wings out. We fight humidity, which seems to be harder than straight heat. But, ours stay in the coop when it's hot and they have the AC.

We live in Austin, TX and yes, it's HOT!!! Right now I make sure that they have plenty of water available. I have 1 stainless steel dog bowl that I keep full and two of the waterers with the screw on bases. I fill them with ice in the late morning when it starts to warm (ok, when I get up at around 9). I am also saving the plastic juice bottles and filling them with water and freezing them. I put those out for the girls. We just bought 3 Delaware chicks about 6 wks ago. They LOVE the "ice log". Most of the time they find a shady place, dig a hole and take a nap. They're pretty good at conserving energy.
