About 1 Month ago one of our Buff-Orpington hens began getting broody on 4 eggs. 12 days ago 2 babies hatched and the mother accepted them. yesterday at 7ish EST I went to our coop and saw a alive newborn chick laying in the box. the mother was outside with the other 2 chicks foraging. the mother must have heard the commotion and went into the coop and began trying to kill it. she tried to peck at it and bite at it before I intervened. it must have sensed weakness or didn't accept the baby. we retrieved one of our containers we have used in the past for our chicks. we have our chick lamp hanging above the enclosure and the substrate is 2 inches of the shavings we use plus a layer of paper towels. we have a food bowl with the chick feed that has successfully raised our chicks in the past. we have a very small water bowl and I have been dropping little water drops on the end of her beak with a eyedropper. she seems not very puffy. whenever she hears my voice she opens her eyes and wobbles over to me. after a couple seconds of wobbling she lays her head back down and closes her eyes. ill send pictures soon. please help :( this is our 4th year raising chickens and the first time we have allowed the mother to lay her own eggs. HELP PLEASE!

Welcome to BYC. I would try to keep the chick warm and give water and chick crumbles to it to see if you can save it. It just may be too weak to make it, and why the broody had left it. I have hatched eggs with broodies, and always have trouble with other hens continuing to lay eggs in the broody nest. It really helps to mark the eggs so that chicks are not hatched at different times. You are so lucky to have found the chick, and I really hope that you can save it. Leg bone deformities and slipped tendons can be common in baby chicks. Many of those do not make it.
