Hi again everyone. Long time no post! I haven't been to BYC since June? Wow, where did the time go? Well, spent most of the summer tending to my mother-in-law. She was in and out of the hospital no less than 5 times in 5 months. Whew!
My hens are doing great, though. ONE more post and I think I can finally post photos of my flock. Here's a little clip on YouTube of my cats, dogs and chickens...and a big giant FUNGUS growing in an old rabbit hutch!!!
I forgot to mention that Oprah, my oldest chicken and most tame, passed away in September from a chronic crop condition. I had performed home surgery on her back in December after the vet said he would have to charge me over $300. I ordered the silk suture and sterile scalpels off EBay and performed a crop evacuation myself back in December '10. The mass of Alfalfa hay we removed was the size of a baseball! She did surprisingly well after the surgery but her crop lost a LOT of muscle tone from being distended with alfalfa hay for about 3 months. Who's to say if I waited to long to do the surgery, but she ended up with a lazy crop that wouldn't empty properly...and boy, did she like to eat! She ate and ate and ate and it was always a daily massage to her crop by me that kept the food going all the way into her stomach. She never really regained proper crop function even though her sutures and incision healed well. Anyway, I need to find the video of the surgery my daughter assisted with and posted on YouTube. RIP Oprah, you were a great hen and I'm glad to have given you a few more months on this Earth.
