Slimer from Ghostbusters was an inner joke that Akroyd had based on his dear friend, John Belushi, who had recently passed away. Slimer was a comedic tribute to Belushi, featuring cartoonish exaggerations of his gluttony.

I have always heard this rumor, also that Belushi was originally supposed to play Peter Veinkman, Bill Murray’s character in the film.
