My first batch hatches in 2 days the other ones have 6

10 chicks will be hatching between the tow batches. I candled and kept the viable ones with chicks in them.

So the first chick I helped seems to be doing well and has been transferred to the brooder.

This morning was hoping to find the ones that had been pipped most of the day yesterday out. They weren't. Had a couple others that must have pipped and zipped in the night. Dry and feisty, so they went into the brooder too.

Decided to carefully help the 6 slowpokes.

Number one had a toe out of his hole and didn't seem to be moving, so I thought it had passed. But when I started removing shell bits heard weak peeping. Was a bit shrink wrapped so removed a good chunk of shell and used olive oil on the membrane. Did the same for 3 others that were still peeping, left them all still partway in shell, hopefully can do the rest on their own.

Sadly the other 2 had passed. Eggtopsy revealed that one had a lot of blood in the shell, so assuming it tore a bloodvessel and bled out. The other one had not absorbed all the yolk, but otherwise looked fine, so not sure. ☹

The shrink wrapping is probably my fault for open the bators to remove dry chicks. I just hate leaving them in there because they knock the other eggs around so much. I'm 90% sure the one that passed the other day while I was away grandma sitting, was due to being rolled upside down. It was in the middle of zipping and looked fine when eggtopsied.

I've decided I need to design a incubator that you can remove the dry chicks without opening!

Mine aren't supposed to hatch until the 11th, but I'll make sure to let you know when they hatch!

The one on the left has been over 36 hours... I very gently made the opening a little bigger just so I could see inside to made sure she was alive. I saw a little blood on the underside of the membrane, so I didn't open it any further. Seemed to be breathing okay, chirping okay, but isn't making progress... was supposed to hatch Sunday. (I put the egg in on the 14th.) How long should I give her and if I do have to help get her out, how would I do that? (Sorry the photo is a little fuzzy, I didn't want to open the lid and let out humidity. I have two others pipped in there.)

How many have finished hatching? If there are others that are still actively working on hatching from the same batch of eggs, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Rather than counting the hours I typically go by how the rest of the hatch is progressing. If most of the chicks have hatched and I'm looking at the final few stragglers that haven't made any progress, that's when I start considering an intervention, unless I see something unusual that definitely needs a hand sooner.

Though I will admit 36 hours since an internal pip is a long time.

I was late to the party too. Day 16 today for my 5 remaining EHAL eggs, I'm locking down tomorrow as I often get a lot of day 20 hatchers.
