I had a chick hatch this morning, and its been really slow coming around. He/she will perk up when it see's me, but then fall on its face to sleep again. It has a red swollen bump on its rear with dried blood. It lost quite a bit of blood when it came out of the shell. Now I have a second one that is still attached to the shell by its umbilical cord, dragging the egg around, Is there anything I can do? What causes this? Can they recover from this?

Thank you!

It's called a rough naval and it's caused from hatching too early. Usually from humidty too high or temp being too high during incubation.

Hi Mandy,

Thank you for the reply. Humidity is about 56% unless someone is hatching then it rises a bit. Is there anything I can do? Is it lethal?

I have had the same thing happen to me. You might have some die. But mostly they will live and the bump on the rear will go away and you won't ever see it again.

She just seems so lethargic, has anyone seen any improvement over time? I know she has 3 days on the yolk so I wont worry too much until then. I have one that is still dragging the egg around, she's mad!

If the cord is narrow and mostly dry to the one dragging the egg shell, trim it off next to the shell. It will dry and fall off the chick on it's own.

I had one recently who died because she pipped through the cord near the yolk as she tried to hatch, bled out and died. So they can actually hurt themselves as they hatch. And it was following a massive temp spike so I expected disaster and had to help 4 of 6 survivors. 134 degrees is not recommended for good hatching - sigh...

Usually once they have hatched given time they recover. You can offer slow ones a couple of drops of light Karo syrup - the extra energy helps them come around. Or you can put electrolytes in the water - I keep a bag of powdered around but unflavored pedialyte (generic) also works.

If Gatorade is what you have dilute it to about 1/2 strength. It has a spitload of sugar.

Hi everyone!

I woke up to a wonderful surprise this morning. I am 13/13 and all are alive and well. I did bring my humidity up from 50% to 70% and the last one popped out without a problem and the one I thought I was going to lose is running around screaming at me wanting out
