I use my cell phone flashlight and put it on the frame of the coop pointed at the ceiling so it is a soft light and doesn't light up the whole coop. They FREAKED out when I tried again so just haven't bothered.........
Today I built them a smaller roosting bar and put it by their cuddle huddle spot (through the middle of it) in hopes it would encourage at least a FEW to try it and then they would transition over to the higher ones. Well I watched on the camera and they went in when it was getting to dusk and one would pop in and hop up on the bar, then down and walk back out of the coop (they do an in and out of the coop a few times before they settle in for the night), then another would do the same. I think 4 of them tried that. Then they all came in and starred at it and were squaking away. Then settled down squished in behind it, under it and around it..... not ONE went on it. I asked my husband to peek at the camera before the door opens to see if they use it then.
one thing I am wondering is even with the 4 windows and peaks open in my coop they go in later so it is already kinda dark in there when they go in so wonder if that may be why they don't go up on them??? Would getting a soft (very soft) light on a timer and have it on for like 15-30 min after they go in shining on the roosting bar help? I don't want to make it too bright or mess with their natural schedule but thought maybe something soft on for a few after they went in if they can't see well when they go in?
