Momma hen and Nugget are the proud momma's of 13 chicks between them. Momma has 5 chicks. She was sitting on 11 eggs. She last came off her nest 2 day before they hatched and still had 11, but when we moved her thursday when they started hatching 2 of her eggs had vanished. The only thing I can think of that could have gotten to her nest was maybe a snake to take the 2 eggs. Her first 5 hatched out by thursday evening and she was still sitting on the remaining 4 untill this afternoon when me and mom candled and then did a eggtopsy. It looks like they quit about a week ago. Nugget has 8 chicks. 4 of her own and 4 I think orp or orp mixes. All of hers hatched a day early as well. I assumed she was only sitting on 8 as when she started sitting she only had 4 of her own eggs. The following morning I added the 4 additional eggs to hers to make 8. I never checked her nest when she was off as she only came off every 2 days and for only a few minutes at a time. So i was shocked when i moved her and the chicks to see she had a additional egg. We also checked that one today and it was a complete dud, i'm surprised it never exploded as there was no development at all. All the chicks are doing well and for a first timer at only 6 months old Nugget is so far a fantastic mother. Momma has surprised me though. This is her 3rd gang of babies in a years time and I think after 3 years she finally trusts me. Instead of trying to kill me as i moved her and her babies she allowed me to pick her up without even a peck. She didn't attack me either when i removed her remaining eggs today and when i've had to reach in her crate to fill water and feed. More importantly, I can touch and hold these babies without fear of loosing a eye. My spoiled marans are fascinated with the babies and very jealous when i'm attending to them. After feeding and watering this afternoon I was sitting out there watching to make sure they were learning to drink when I had 3 pile on my lap and the others laying under my feet.
