I am a newbie, first flock and I am really enjoying it. I love this byc app.. I have SLW and some silkies . One of the SLW is a rooster and I'm not sure if his behavior is normal... He is very nasty to all the pullets, charging at them. Challenging then and if they don't fight back he just keeps being mean. I have added distractions in the coop and there is plenty of room . He's not mean to me but why is he so mean to my pullets they are all the same age. There is no sign of him trying to mate. If a pullet stands up to him he backs right down so he's basically just makes life miserable for the sweet girls . Can he be helped ? or will this change?

That's a teen roo for you.

Yes, they can be obnoxious. Usually it is because of over-breeding, but perhaps he is a little too young for that and just wants a sparring partner. Even with everything to distract him, maturing can be a time where he easily gets bored. Give him some time, he should work it out.

Best of luck!

Thank you for the advice! I would love to keep him, just not at the expense of others being tortured.. Do you have any idea How long it usually takes? For them to mature I mean.

My rooster I think was about half a year old when he mellowed out. He is wonderful. However, all the teens that he raises as his sons fall in love with the hens and accidentally scratch the feathers off them.

Harriet, missing some feathers due to a romantic young rooster
