I think it is just because guys in the big business of agriculture want to be in control of ♪ everything ♪.

If left to herself, a hen may take more time to run thru a molting cycle than she really has to. If left to the flock, some will be in molt, some coming out, some not started.

Whip them into shape . . . turn the lights out on 'em, restrict their feed, etc. Rush them all thru the molt together in as short a time as possible. Be done with it!

Okay. I am probably painting the guy who is just trying to make a few cents profit off a dozen eggs, in a bad light. But, that's my 2¢. And, now we are high-jacking your thread, jmagill
