I’ve got a lethargic 4.5 month old Barred rock that is 1.5 lbs (693 grams) and very skinny. She’s to the point of needing tube feeding which will be a first for me. I have two questions, first her crop isn’t completely emptying, I can feel seeds in there two mornings in a row and she hasn’t eaten seeds for a couple days. I was trying to avoid forced vomiting but I may be at that point, she was given some mineral oil and wormed with valbazen, she has since pooped some but nothing has moved from her crop except fluids. So should I force empty her crop before I try to tube feed her? She’s very weak and just sleeps. Second question, I’ve ordered baby bird formula but that may take days to get here. Does anyone have a homemade formula I can use until it arrives? I have access to a Tractor Suppy and I have puppy formula at home. Thanks!

Chicken in question (Peepers) died two nights ago. I finally got around to doing a necropsy today to see where things went a foul. Well low and behold she basically died of Hardware Disease and its resulting septicemia. I found a roundish piece of silicone about 1.5 in long and another smaller one in her lower intestine plus she was full of rusted metal chips. (We have an old Caboose that flakes off tons of metal shavings and they love to loaf under it. We’ve been trying to get rid of it, even before this discovery) Very unfortunate end but I’m glad I have a diagnosis.
On another note, I discovered if you’re in need of a feeding tube in a pinch, the tubes inside sm/med spray bottles are the perfect size and length. Be sure to boil them before use of course.
