My Australorp is 14 weeks old, and now I’m questioning if “she” is a hen. She was sexed when I got her, so I thought it was pretty much guaranteed that she would be a hen. However, her long, curved tail feathers are telling me otherwise. What do y’all think?

Please be nice if the answer is painfully obvious, I’ve never had chickens before! This is a learning experience for me. :) With that being said, let me know if additional pictures or information are needed.

Until the sickle feathers most would have called this one a pullet due to stance and unless you zoom in those hackle and saddle feathers are not very evident. I am finding this breed a challenge as the color of feathers and sheen make it difficult to see the shape of the hackle feathers and saddle feathers seem to come on later. Size of the shank compared to others the same age, stance, if a cockerel is raised with a rooster I find a delayed puberty...comb development, feather and dominance are all delayed. If raised with pullets or hens maturity is accelerated. Of course this is just observation and what I have learned from others over the years.
Question, any roosters at your place? Did this BA stand differently then your others? Keep to itself away from others? Would love to hear your observations of this baby.

Agree he is a boy. Unfortunately, no hatcheries can guarantee 100% that you have a sexed pullet. Vent sexing, even in the hands of an expert, is 90% accurate at best, so unfortunately you have the 1 in 10 that ends up being a boy. Hope you can find a good home for him.😊

Agreed it’s a cockerel but a real looker. I think every time I have bought pullets as day olds I find most hatcheries send you an extra or two. Every time I get an extra it ends up being a cockerel. But everyone is right day old feather sexing is a 90% accuracy.

I love australorps! unfortunately all mine turned out to be males. This one is too. They are amazing rooster's because I had one at the same age as yours take down a garden snake that was right beside me. If you can keep it I would recommend it. They are amazing protectors. If not, I'm sorry. I had to find new homes for mine as well.
