Hi! We have 15 Buff Orpingtons that are a little over a week old. The hatchery guaranteed 95% accuracy, but we are unsure as to whether some of our girls are actually cockerels. Ten of them have beautiful wings and tail feathers, while five have much smaller wings and little to no tail feathers. Are these chicks actually cockerels or are they merely not growing as fast as the others?

This is a picture representing what 2/3 of our chicks look like.

But here is a picture of what the other 1/3 look like.

Can anyone help me?

To my untrained, newbie eye, it looks as though the one in the top pic is about a week older than the one in the bottom pic. I think it's too soon to tell what they are at this age. Hopefully, someone else will weigh in on this!

To me , at this age, you can mostly tell by feathers. Sometimes they will start a comb but not usually till week 2.

I think they mean a pic of the comb.
