I have a co worker who recieved her chicks this morning from a hatchery that has only a 15 chick minimum. However when she opened the lid she realized there were way more then 15 chicks, when she counted she counted 25. When she called the hatchery they told her those were peanut chicks to keep the 15 she wanted warm. They are male leghorns.
Is this common practice for 15 minimum orders? In the brochure there was a small line in the very back that talked about peanut chicks for warmth, it was not very prominent at all and did not appear on her invoice when she ordered them online.

She has placed and add on our company website (interoffice only) and craigslist to see if she can give them to someone with reptiles to feed or if someone just plain wants them. She will not have the heart to do them in once they get of size.

Yes, it is common. If you do not want "peanuts" added, then you must purchase insurance and specify that you do not want extra chicks for warmth. The hatcheries generally add more hay or some sort of substrate to help insulate the chicks on their journey. In warmer months, the extra chicks are usually not added. It's been quite cold recently.

Meyer Hatchery can ship as few as 3 baby chicks without adding "packing peanuts" The only thing they may add is up to 4% extra female chicks of a breed you ordered. Maybe give them a try next time!
