16 new chickens in the Finger Lakes

Yes, your boys will start fighting as they mature and even if they dont, your girls will soon have not feathers on their backs! One rooster can do that with 8 hens, let alone 8 roosters!!

Heated coop?! Very nice!! Spoiled babies!!

Another plus, if you find new homes for most of the roosters, you can get more hens!! You coop won't be big enough for too many more birds in there. OR, you could build a couple more coops and separate the birds out by breeds and get lots more hens?!!!!

Thanks for the pics...my girl's feather coloring is similar, but the head is different. How much does their coloring and waddle/comb size change as they mature?

My chanteclers head/wattle/combs have not changed at all. She's a cold weather breed and thus is adapted for that. You may have a brahma EE cross? They're all beautiful none the less

Good luck with your flock!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Paula

I am new to the forum. I recently acquired 16 chickens from a family friend who had to move very suddenly. The woman kept and showed chickens geese and ducks. I am very interested in homesteading/sustainability, so I have always planned on having chickens. I hadn't planned on having them this soon, but I couldn't say no.

With the help of my father, my brother and several friends, I built an 8 X 8 chicken coop from many found items including an old treehouse. We ended up spending ~$80 building materials and coop supplies...not bad!

I am not very knowledgeable with regards to poultry, but I am trying to learn quickly. I am happy to find this website and forum. I am sure I will be referencing it quite a bit as I try to figure out how to best care for my chooks.

I have:

4 Salmon Favorelle hens
2 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte hens
3 Blue Laced Red Wyandotte roosters
2 Lakenvelder roosters
1 Plymouth Rock Barred hen
1 Plymouth Rock Barred rooster
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantam hen
1 Dark Brahma Rooster
1 hen...not sure what she is (if you can identify in the pics, I would love to know what she is)

They are all pretty young...most were hatched in the late spring/ early summer. I am getting 1-3 eggs a day, but I am hoping that will increase once the weather warms up and the hens mature.

Hi Paula,
My name is Tina and I grew up in Farmington. Spent many a summer at our cottage on Canandagiua (sp) Lake. I live in Brockport now which is about 45 min from Farmington.
Love the pics of your birds. We have a few of the same breeds. I've had chickens for 4 years and My vet cares for poultry too if you should ever need one .
Maybe we should get a WNY meeting going sometime this summer. That would be fun.

Hi Tina! Good to hear from another upstate Ny'er.

I would love to be involved with a WNY meet-up. I will also keep your vet in mind. I live on a dairy farm, so our large animal vet has answered any questions that I have at the moment. If something complicated arises, I will definitely contact you for your vet's info.

I have had several changes since my last post...

As my roos matured, we began to have difficulty with them fighting. I do not have enough coop space to separate, so I ended up meeting a couple of very nice people on this forum who traded roos for hens. I ended up with two Rhode Island Reds and I ill hopefully be getting three Easter Egger hens once they are mature enough to integrate with my hens. I kept my Dark Brahma roo and also got a Golden Comet from a chicken enthusiast in Mendon.

I made some considerable improvements to the yard this spring. The chooks now have a very large yard with roosts, a kiddie pool (they really don't seem to be interested in it though) and a sandy area. I also ended up switching bedding in the coop from straw to pine shavings. I am extremely happy with the difference. I am considering moving to sand bedding for the summer.

I am getting 5-6 eggs a day and loving the chooks! My Rhode Island Reds have such sweet personalities! They are by far the friendliest chickens in my coop.
