Symptoms - no muscle tone or response in the left leg. Leg bone isn't broken and the thigh bone appears to be intact as well. No reaction when touching the toes, no curling or attempting to grasp on the left side. The whole leg just dangles loose.

She is alert and looking around. I've put here in a crate in the basement with food and water. The temps have been close to 110 for the last 2 weeks. No signs of injury and no feathers scattered in the run or the yard. She was fine about 5.30PM, chasing bugs in the yard with the other pullets. Anyone have any ideas? I called the vet and they said could be a heat stroke type symptom.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 16 week old. Normal weight EE pullet

2) What is the behavior, exactly. loss of muscle tone/response in left leg. Just checked on her and left wing is also drooping

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? since last night

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? no

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. no. also no feather loss or signs of a predator encounter. heat has been around 110 for several days.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. heat stroke?

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. grower pellets. ice water in all of the waterers to help with heat

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. all the girls have slightly watery poo since the heat started

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? cool quiet place with food and water at hand

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? already contacted the vet. said that it sounds like a heat stroke

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. n/a

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use hay

Well, she has dislocated her knee. vet said that there is nothing that he knows to be done but with rest she might gain the muscle power to stabilize the joint. she's eating and drinking normally and will hobble around a little bit so we have her in a cool quiet place so we will see how she does.

thanks.
this isn't a problem that I've had before. I've had a bird once who dislocated at the thigh, but with some time and manipulation she was almost good as new. This is at the "knee" where feathers meet the scale of the leg. My husband thinks that she must have gotten her leg tangled in something. The youngsters have been flying up the fence and roosting under the roof. Maybe she got her leg tangled in the squares of the fence.

She is talking and eating so that is a good sign.
