So.. came home to my already a but behind baby bird looking like she was kicked in the face/ head/ attacked etc

First thing I did was call local vet. No room at the inn and I've set appt for 9am tomorrow.. not sure she will make it overnight.

I've rinsed her face w warm saline bc I'm afraid to do much else..

Her tongue is working

One side of her face is blue which at first we were like hmmm, but I'm assumimg bruising from whatever the trauma was.

This baby kinda falls over a bit on the regular.
Not exactly failure to thrive, not crossbeak, tho i do think her bill doesn't close quite right so I often ensure she's got a full crop at night.

Questions:

I plan to see doc in am

She's crated in a warm, quiet room

I rinsed her face with warm saline

maybe she was trampled

Top bill looks like 2/3 gone
Bottom is split, one big chunk needs to come off but I'm not touching that.

One side of her face is blue.

She is very sweet but i don't want to over mess with and make the shock worse.

Can I put topical arnica on the blue side.. I'll try to get better/ additional pics.. these were fast when I was trying to get into the vet for today.

I planned to put REALLY WET MASH IN CRATE W ROOSTER BOOSTER, egg yolk and honey in case she can get any in. She's entirely too small for me to try to use syringe and not aspirate.

Any otc pain I can add to that mash in case she does try?

Until I can get a very good, cleaned up look I don't want to add to her trauma. I would sanitize w iodone but she was licking when i was rinsing.

Thanks

This photo best shows the split in the bottom beak. If you're looking at the photo, the side closet to tie steering wheel is the post that is loose

Sorry about your pullet. How old is she and approximately how much does she weigh? I have seen a couple of beak injuries here on BYC in the past this bad or worse, and the chickens lived. It takes a lot of nursing care over weeks, and tube feeding may be needed until she heals enough to relearn how to eat. Feeding tube sets are available from Amazon and probably your vet. KayTee Exact baby bird feed is commonly used with tube feedings 2-3 times a day. Beak injuries are very painful at first. I will post some links on tube feeding and the tube sets. But first treat her for shock with some sugar water or electrolytes dripped into her beak.

I'll weigh her. I've done feeding for cross beaks prior.. one not done tube feeds but I'll be happy to do what it takes..

I made really wet mash w feed, poultry cell, honey and egg yolk..i assumed she wouldn't touch it... but she did.. likely not much made it in, and she tried some water also. I'll post video here and the left side of her face bc we can't imagine what happened.. I'm pretty sure also that she's got a broken middle toe. I iced that for just a few while holding her other foot so she wouldn't be chilled.. she was sleeping last i checked..I was hoping someone had injectible pain meds.

I'll weigh her. Thank you for the help...

Left side of face and her sleeping. I'm trying to post vid of her tryingb to eat

You can also try torpedo feeding, which is making little torpedo shaped pieces of food (egg plus chicken feed and a bit of water,) and placing them into her beak to swallow. The hen in the BYC thread that Wyorp Rock posted, had to be tube fed twice a day for some time. That takes about 2-3 minutes. Then she learned how to eat scrambled egg. Finally she was able to eat normal food again. It took a lot of time and care. The usual volume of tube feed is about 15 ml per pound 2-3 times a day. Of course, it should be smaller amounts right at first. I am glad that she is having a good appetite.
