17 week old Speckled Sussex Rooster not crowing

Hello,

I have a 17 week old Speckled Sussex Rooster that hasn't crowed yet, he has made some strange strangled sounding noises a handful of times, but he should be crowing by now shouldn't he? I have read that some roosters from this breed have whisper crows, could it be that, or is he just not old enough yet to be crowing?

Keep in mind I am happy he isn't, I live in the suburbs so I can't have an overly noisy rooster! How old before I can confirm he has a whisper crows instead of a full blown one?

Some roosters don't crow a lot. I think the sussex having quiet crows is likely hogwash.

Some roosters don't start crowing until over a year+ old.

Some I've had started as early as 3 weeks! Technically still called cockerels until 1 year old.

It's totally individual and may be influenced by your environment.. ie, flock dynamics, hearing other roosters crowing at the neighbors, car alarms going off, dogs barking, and when he really starts feeling confident he won't be eaten, has somebody to show off for or compete with..

Man, hundreds of cockerels/roosters I've raised including some Speckled Sussex and never yet a whisper crow, not even from bantams!

I've even had a hen crow!

My two roos didn't start until around 22 weeks. The alpha roo had a full crow within a couple days, but months later the other one still sounds like he's being strangled.

Thankyou for such a detailed response!! I sort of know deep down he will start crowing but I want him to not so much I'm trying to will it into being haha
