18 keets but lots of questions

Personally, I would worry every time I fed if I knowingly didn't feed the higher protien. They need more protien, go with game bird starter. It's a few dollars more, but for my worrying nature and my sanity I'll spend it! Ours do wander into the chicken coop and eat layer crumbles and starter/grower, but I feed game bird every morning. Personally, I feel it's important for them to have the extra protien.

My guineas won't touch scraps like the chickens will. They won't eat oats or yogurt or table scraps. They do love them some scratch and cracked corn, but that's about as far as they go with feed.

Our guineas quit going back to the coop after they'd been here about 2 months. Now they roost at the very tops of the trees, incredibly high. You can't even see them. In the winter they roost in the tall cedar trees at night. We had a couple of blizzards here this past winter and we tried and tried to get them back into the coop but they weren't having it

We caught a couple with a fishing net and got them in the coop, but never the others. They rode out snowstorms in the cedar trees and survived. Goobers!

Females have a 2 syllable call, males have a 1 syllable. Just got sit outside with them for an hour or so, it's fairly easy to distinguish between the two.

The "Vuturine" Guinea is from the African plains and there are a few breeders that have them in the US. They are VERY expensive and not available all the time. They are much more vunurable to the cold and are NOT recommended for free range.

There is yet another Guinea fowl called the crested Guinea.
These guys are also from the Plains of Africa.

Question: Will an 8 high X 8 X 10 coop with 7ft roosts in T shape be enough roosting for the 15 RIRs and 9 guineas? Should I buld more roosts? see photo.

Inside. Had to cover entire top row of nests with tarp to keep youngsters from filling with poop!

Shady run with shed to be considered for guineas. Question: Is 5ft tall too short?

brooder inside coop. girls are twice this size now. had to build slant roof all way to edge to keep them off. Question: Will chickens accept keets if they are visible in coop brooder?

Should be plenty of room!

I know my two year old chickens accepted my keets just fine. The only issue was the rooster, but the keets learned quick to stay out of his way.

whew Thank you, thank you.

We worked so hard on the main coop, I felt like I was treating them like step children having to house them in anything less. The main coop has 12 nest boxes and room for another row of 4 if neccessary, tho they would be at 7 ft height.

I'm probably over thinking this.

Do guineas need grit?

Nice coop. Guinea will eat grit and oyster shell and poultry grain and just about all the treats that a chicken will.

If you are not forcing the food (by only giving them one option), then let em go for it.

Glad you have discovered the world of Guinea fowl.
