My girls are 18 weeks and no eggs yet! Also in the last 2-3 weeks i've noticed that 2 of them has gotten bigger brighter red combs and wattles. The other 2 are starting to now. Is this normal for hens?
most pullets start to lay around 6 months but some take longer than that. if you post some pics that might help. pullets will get red in the face when they get close to laying as well
Your hen will mature and they will get red faced...meaning their combs and wattles will grow and turn red. The next thing you may notice as they get close to laying is that they will do a squatting action. If you reach down to touch them and they squat, they may have about a week before they lay eggs. Then, they will go in and out of your nests and rearrange them. Be sure and put some "fake" eggs (plastic easter eggs or a golf ball) in the nests. This will show them where they should lay their eggs. If you put them in now, they will get use to them ( peck at them and be interested in them) which is good, because when they finally lay eggs, they won't be interested anymore and there won't be a tendency to peck at them anymore. When they are about to lay their eggs, they will do the egg song. Squawking and bawking. You can google the egg song. You don't have long to wait now...usuallly 20 - 24 weeks. Some will sooner, some later. So just watch for the signs. Good Luck!
