This is our 19-20 wk old Barred Rock "Henny Penny". Henny does not crow but is kinda noise...kinda a repedative squawking noise. She does herd the other "girls" and just last night she started to chase and pin down one of our silkie/polish mixes.
That's a hen, and from the looks of things if she's not laying now she will be in the next few weeks. If they're free range, have you gone on an egg hunt, or confined them to the coop for a few days? Sure looks like she's laying to me.
First off thank you all for taking the time to look at her and post your opinions.
She is now pinning down one of our silkie/polish crosses by biting the poof on top of the crosses head with her beak and mounting her like a rooster would to mate...have read this happens sometimes in flocks without roosters.
We got our 1st egg from the entire flock (1Barred rock, 1 Wellsummer, 1 wyndotte an 2 silkie/polish) it was cream colored and smaller than normal egg but bigger than quail egg, so assuming it came from one of the silkie/polish girls who are 4 weeks older. Have my kids and wife scouring the yard to see if they find any larger browner eggs that might be from this Barred Rock while I'm at work.
Pic is of 1st egg we found this morning...it's the one in the middle and the one on the left is from a farmers market and AA battery for size comparison.
Alrighty got a couple side views of our Barred Rock in question. We have been keeping them confined to the coop for a couple days to see if we find a light brown egg as "she" is the only one that should be at lay'n age and of that color type in our flock
