For a couple of weeks now, every now and then, I see some of our girls laying on their side with wings spread out and closing their eyes. They are eating, drinking, running around like normal any other time. But every now and then, they lay as if they may be in pain? I have seen it mostly in our Crested Cream Legbars, but also in some of our Black Copper Marans. All are the same age.

Is this a behavior right before they lay their first egg? No eggs have been laid yet.

Are they in the sun? My hens do this while sunbathing

They were today, but the first time I caught them, about 2 weeks ago, they were in the shade.

I have two Crested Cream Legbars, and they were doing it together today. Sunbathing would definitely give me peace of mind. 😅
I understand 😂 Well my birds like to lay on the ground and in the sun but when it’s really hot they do the same thing in the shade as the ground is cooler. I’m by no means an expert but if everything else is normal (diet, activity and drinking) I would say you have nothing to worry about. There’s a lot of really great people on here so if there is a problem I’m sure you’ll get a response.

Thank you so much! ❤️

Mine used to roll up onto the back porch, flop over on the welcome mat next to each other, and spread the wing out. The first time one of them did it as a chick, I thought she was dying.

Your girls are just happy, content, and feel safe!

(And sun hitting the exposed areas helps drive bugs to places they can get at them.)

Uhm yea this scared the crap out of me the first time I saw mine doing it in every area she could. I thought something was wrong, but she was just relaxing!
