Now it's my turn to wait & watch. I have 2 Black Cochin mix pullets that turn 5 months on Aug 8. The largest of the two (from an Austrolorp mix and a pure Blue Cochin) has had a red comb for several weeks. I also have a pure Blue Cochin turning 5 months same day. 1 out of 3 is ready to start so we'll see how long it takes her - (unless she's the one who laid an egg in the yard Friday?? It is unusual to find an egg in the yard).

Ugh, I'll join this party.... I'm so sick of waiting! My girls are almost 23 weeks and still nothing! Not only am I dreaming about finding eggs, my boyfriend is as well and confessed to me last night that he had considered buying eggs and putting them in the nests so I could find them and stop obsessing!

Haha! My girls looked so mature... I was sure they were going to start weeks ago... Here's a picture from 3 weeks ago:

Sigh... How much longer, ladies?!

Yep, sounds like it'll be any day, but I know how you feel. My Leghorn, Daisy was the first of my 4 hens to lay at 15 weeks almost exactly and My Ameracauna, Xena was right behind her at 16 1/2. I'm STILL waiting on my RIR and Barred to get going and I know they are close. Try walking up to them and see if they squat for you, also if you notice them gaining interest in the nest boxes...that was a big cue for me. Everyone is right about the heat though...if it is hot there, it will affect their laying. Good luck!

Your girls are all good looking, even the Aflac girl!!

I finally got my first egg yesterday! It is from one of my Marans, not sure which. One is much larger than the other, so I assumed it was her egg, but then today I saw the smaller of the two in the nesting box. She is the smartest and most adventurous of all my birds, so not sure if she was thinking of making me a present, or just being nosy. Anyway, the larger egg is a dummy. The little one is from my girls. It's really pretty--quite small, but perfectly egg-shaped. It's the size and shape of the bowl of a teaspoon! These girls are between 20 ad 21 weeks, with the larger one possibly a week older.

Hello figured it's time to join and not just lurk! my girls are 17.5 week Golden Sex Links & Amber Whites and 16 week old PBR & RIR. Set up the nest boxes and added wooden eggs last Tuesday and can see they've been messing around and checking them out......Was out doing coop chores this morning and let the girls out to range the yard, Frankie and Francine the goldens where hanging around me and Frankie Squatted! I have bets going with my boys on the order of who's gonna lay first....I think I'm gonna win!!!! Here is a picture of Frankie, she has only two or three tail feathers left, they are all moulting? i think....don't see much picking or pecking, and it seems to be all of them? My RIR have the biggest reddest combs and wattles and I'm betting on them next, the Ambers and PBRs are still not as red and mature in the wattles, very excited about my first Squat!!!

Hi,
I got my first egg this weekend - at 17 weeks. It could have actually been there a few days because I wasn't looking for eggs quite this soon. We
have one Red Sex link that I am assuming laid it. The others are 1 Brahman and 2 Cochins.
I had just noticed the other day that one squatted when I reached in the cage. Is this the behavior you are talking about?I
sure enjoy listening to them!P

Yes i reached for something close to her and she squatted down wings out to the side, head down a bit, and butt in the air, I have read about this but never saw the live feed hee hee, no doubt about it, when I saw it I knew that was a squat!! So I did what I read other people do, rubbed her back and then she wandered away :)

I have 3 Red Prod. 1 BO and a roo named BIG Al. NONE are laying! BIG Al I can understand~lol, but come on girls. They are 19+ weeks and nada. My red girls have combs so big they flop in their eyes, sort of like fleshy bangs. I look in the nest boxes and maybe they are mussed a bit. Although I saw my black kitten Boogie coming out of the coop yesterday- who knows he could be laying in there *sigh* My husband has started to suspect that this free-range egg thing is a myth and that he has spent a fortune on some feathered yard ornaments.
