19 and a half weeks old and still no eggs :( egg countdown anyone??

Bitter Sweet first egg! I am a bit worried about my pullet Frankie, she was acting weird late this afternoon so I picked her up and put her in the coop she came out and just stood around tail down acting weird clingy and dopey, so I put her back in the coop to hang and was poop scooping the run checking on her periodically, once when I looked she was in the nest box laying down(a first) she then stood up took two steps out and plopped out this weird soft shelled egg in the coop not fully formed!!! She was acting really strange standing around not moving tail down for several hours afterwards but seemed to perk up a bit after a while and went to roost with the other ladies at dusk? I hope she was just in shock! and nothing is wrong. It was about the size of a large grocery store egg with a deep yellow/orange yolk! I had it for dinner with a salad and our first garden tomatoes. We are very very proud of our little Pullet she was 17 weeks and 6 days old today...We will keep an eye on her and hope for the best in the week to come, we have 4 girls squatting now out of nine, Frankie did her first squat last Sunday 6 days ago..........

What is "squatting"???

That's when they squat down low with the "shoulders" of their wings lifted - it looks weird, not a normal squat so you'll know it when you see it. They'll do it when you try to pick them up or reach for them. I wasnt sure either but when Queenie did it four days ago I had no doubt that was it. Both my barred rocks are doing it now!

So eggcited! My 19 week old BR started squatting 4 days ago and today she is very preoccupied with sitting in and checking on her nesting box - something she never even seemed to notice until last night.

My barred rock bows down with her wings out when I try to pick her up. Is that squatting? If so, how long until she starts laying? And do they squat after they start laying? Thanks!

That sounds like it. About your other question, couldn't have answered it until about 30 minutes ago - just got FIRST EGGGGGG! SO EXCITED. I noticed first squat almost five days ago. This is my first "first egg" so I don't know if that's average or not. She laid it in the nest box right next to the ceramic egg.

I wish I could figure out picture posting instead of just links!!! I can't copy/paste from my phone album.

Well I have 7 girls who are now 18 weeks old; the other 5 are younger by a week to 10 weeks, so I've got forever to wait for those ones, but I think I could pretty much start expecting eggs any time now right?? I have read 20 weeks is average, so technically some of my birds could start as early as now? I have a RIR, black Australorp, 2 Buff Orps, 2 Easter Eggers, and a Welsummer at 18 weeks now. C'mon girls!!!
My Leghorn was the first to lay at 16 weeks, and my Ameracauna was next at 17 1/2....my Barred just yesterday started to squat and she is almost 20 weeks so hoping for her soon. My RIR will probably be last which surprised me, and I have one old SLW who gave me 2 eggs the week I brought her home and none since. She is a great lawn ornament though.

They probably won't lay on the first day of the squat, my girls started squatting several days before they started laying. How old is your Barred? When she squats, pick her up or stroke her for a few minutes and congratulate her. Are they eating layer feed and getting enough oyster shell? It won't be long now!!
