1st coop and run project.

I'm covering the top w metal roofing. The birds will be locked up tight in coop at night and out in the run during the day. I bought galvanized chicken wire for the run and was going to put a two foot hardware cloth band around the bottom to prevent the reach thru predators. Do you think i should go to 1x2 fencing (welded wire) instead?

That does look very sturdy! I could use your carpentry skills around here.

If that's hardware cloth around the run, your run might be secure enough to leave the coop door open at night unless you're trying to keep the coop warm. Are you going to let them free range in the evenings? It looks like you have a very nice place for that.

I leave the windows in the coop open but the windows are secured with cloth and poultry wire. We are going to let them free range in the evenings.i built the coop as secure as i could due to large populations of raccoons in my area.

I feel your pain. I wish I could let my girls free-range, but we have all kinds of things around here, too. I'm most worried about coyotes and hawks. So we've given them a fenced pasture under an orchard. And we stay pretty close to them most of the time.


I really want to upgrade the roof of my coop to metal for a variety of reasons, and making it as secure as possible from climbing/chewing predators is one of them.

I got lucky on my metal roof. There its a local company that sells seconds. I got my 12 ft panels for 23 dollars a piece. If i wasn't picky i could of got other colors cheeper. That included the screws w 40 yr warranty.

Branches are excellent...give them lots of different sizes and textures for their feet

oh my gosh, if those are 6 week old poullets, I'm gonna have to build fast when I get home! I left mine at 10 days, will be 4 weeks when I get home, oh wow, the crunch is on! LOL
