The kids were so excited today as one of the hens blessed us with the first egg! My question is.... the egg was layed not in the nesting box, but was layed in the chicken run in a tote on its side which was kinda dirty after the rain yesterday. So if we wash the egg off, will it be okay to eat or should we not chance it since it wasn't layed in a nice layer of clean straw in the nesting box?

I eat eggs they lay on the poop board , well washed of course. Go for it!

After washing it,it’s perfectly okay to cook and eat them unless it’s been in the run for wks. Most of my 30 hens lay their eggs in the nesting boxes but occasionally will have some in the poop boards in the morning or an occasional egg in the run. Those we wash and refrigerate/eat first, the clean ones are in egg baskets on the dining room counter for up to 10 days.

Awesome! Thanks everyone! It was the neatest thing seeing the little egg in the morning. Now I want to make cute little nesting box curtains for them. So fun :)

Getting a first egg from a pullet never gets old! :wee I've always wanted some cute little curtains for my nesting boxes... but with 50+ chickens you're lucky just to have enough nests for all of them
