So I bought my first incubator, a still air little giant from TSC with egg turner and set my 12 eggs in it at noon on day 0, watched rhe eggs turn for days 0-7, then went to work on call at hospital for 8 days straight Candled day 15-16 and 11 were definitely fertile with chicks inside and appropriate air cell. Dark shells and I didn't see any actually moving. But I'm a first timer at incubating and hatching, candling. Locked down, increased humidity by adding warm water on day 18 and pulled out second vent plug per instructions. Lots of wiggling and rolling were happening.
First pip late on day 20, hatched at noon on day 21. Perfect little baby. Good deal, no problems so far. Had a pip and rocking, and 1st baby played soccer and a bit of shell fell off the pipped egg and membrane was white and intact. Then, I had to leave the babies in the hands of husband and adult-ish son. And back on call for 48hrs! So, today was day 22, one hatched overnight and another had pipped and then hatched at 5pm.
But, the pipped egg from last night was still hanging out, but with a hole thru membrane and her little beak moving and breathing at 7am. Via facetime, I saw her...and told them, leave her and be patient at noon. Tragically, she died in the Shell, dear son checked on her at 7pm, wasn't moving. He tapped and no cheep or moving. He looked up the assisted hatch thread, and gently worked some of the shell away. Via facetime, I watched and cried a little too. Her membrane was dry and hard, and she was gone already.
What could we have done differently for this one?
Temps were consistent at 99.5-100, humidity stayed 40-50% for first 18 days, then stayed about 60-65 since hatch. I don't have a separate temp/hunidity monitor or a forced air fan.
There are still 7 eggs left unhatched and unpipped at last update from my son. How long do I let them hang out? Will it hurt them bc the other chicks are running around and bumping a lot? He opened the bator twice today, once to take out the oldest chick who was pecking everyone rather meanly (she dove into food and water once in brooder), and once to try to assist the poor little stuck dead one. So temp has fluctuated a little. I'm still learning, and open to suggestions.

How many hatched total? Your temp was too low for a still air, it needs to be at about 102 degs. It is also useful to move the eggs around in the bator to different places as the temp can be different in different spots. Without an independent hygrometer it is difficult to tell if the humidity in your bator was really what the reading said. They are notoriously wrong! It sounds to me like the dead chick was shrink wrapped which indicates lower humidity levels and exposure to temp swings when the incubator is opened. It is a hard thing to manage for sure. The difficulty is when there is an external pip and the chick is getting ready to zip. If the membrane is too dry it gets stuck to the chick and suffocates it. If you have external pips, do not open the bator if at all possible.

Hatched chicks are going to play soccer with the unhatched eggs, this is just a fact of life. In many cases, it is believed that the hatchlings encourage the others to get on with it and hatch already! You managed to hatch out some chicks on your first attempt at hatching, and that is great, congratulations! Post some pics. of the babies if you feel like it.

I've had 3 hatch total. Didn't get opened til today and I think the shrink wrapped baby was already gone when my son pulled out the oldest chick to put in brooder. When I get home tomorrow evening, I will post some pics unless I can figure how to from my phone. (Usig my tablet now while at work). Of course he has sent me many pics of the living chicks.
Should I have him increase the temp now? and see if any of the remaining eggs are still alive tomorrow ? There are 7 remaining, he didn't see any pips.

Dont worry about increasing the temp now, it wouldn't make much difference. The eggs are hatching a little later because of the lower temp. I would leave them until day 24 and see what happens. After that, if there are no pips, take the eggs and candle them or tap on them gently and listen to see if you can hear a tiny tapping or scraping sound in which case put back in the bator and wait.

Thank you so much, we will wait and see what happens. I planned to take out the two hatchling this eve when I get home but would it be better to wait until tomorrow morning? They are both over 24hrs old by the time I get home around 8pm.

If there are no more external pips, then go ahead and quickly take the hatchlings out. If there are external pips, wait for the hatch before opening the bator.
I use this thermometer/hygrometer unit as well as the incubator instruments and another thermometer: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M1LBH7F/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If you purchase this, you MUST calibrate both the thermometer (against a known one, e.g. a medical one) and the hygrometer (by doing the salt test, look this up. Its very easy to do) yourself so you can be absolutely sure about what is going on in the bator. It will save you worry and headaches during incubation (at least about the temp and humidity anyway. :)) My thermometer on this device is 1/2 deg. approx off, so I make adjustments accordingly. The thermometer on my incubator is a full 1 deg too low.

Yes, a mercury one will do fine, put it in a glass of ice water make sure it reads 32 degs and put the tip of the other one in and see what it reads. Do not submerge. Make yourself a note as to the discrepancy so you know how far off it is. P.S. there are no dumb questions, only the mistakes made by not asking in the first place! :)

Agree!:thumbsup I decided to calibrate in my incubator and its a good thing I did, both humidity and temperature are both wrong. Hopefully I'll have a lot better hatch rate than the last one!:fl
