Hello all. I am a new chicken owner. We are just finishing up our coop today. My sweet husband put in a 1x2 roost and I asked him to replace it with a 1x1 roost because I could have swore I read that they like it thinner. I have searched and searched on here and it seems the consensus is a 2x4 laid on it side is the preference. Should I make (ask him sweetly) to replace the roost AGAIN or try the 1x1 and see what happens?
Chickens--just got some chicks from TSC. I am not sure what they are. They called them red pullets. I know they are not Bantams.

We picked up our chicks at TSC also, our coop is nearly done as well. We were just working on the roost. Meanwhile, the chicks are in the garage in a big cardboard box, I've already put roosting polls in the box. I have a skinny little dowel going across and a 2 x 4 they perch on both. I think your 1 x 1 will be fine. Although like you, Im brand new at this also.

The smaller roost will work for now. But, depending on the length of the smaller roost bar, and how many full size chickens sit on it, it may prove to be totally insufficient. It will bow or break. 2X4's, wide side up are the way to go, IMO. Some people use pipes, tree branches, or various wooden dowels. There are many opinions on roosts. But, the bottom line is that you'll probably want to get something a bit heavier duty than you have now. And welcome to BYC!

I'm not sure if I'm calling it right but it is very sturdy. I know it will not now or break just want them to love it & be happy. It is similar to a closet rod but squared off. Thanks for the replies & welcoming. I love this site!!

It would depend on the distance spanned by the roost bar. No way would I use a 1X1" piece in my coop. Not with some of the tubbys I have. Haa.

Chickens' feet do not curl around a roost in the way that many birds' do, and they are apparently pretty uncomfortable on a skinny roost when mature, particularly the larger breeds. I use the side side of a 2x4 and have had a couple larger hens that passed this up in favor of a small shelf. Also, if you are in the north, a wider roost lets them cover their feet in winter, helping to keep their feet warm. Nice, wide branches are fine, too. I'm surprised you found anything recommending a narrow roost pole.

Well I guess I will have him change it out for a 2x4 later if they don't seem to like it.

The ones that came in my little TSC are smaller too. As I build a more permanent open air coop (this one is like two boxes..one screened other somewhat enclosed with a little opening between them) .... I will put in different sizes and levels and let them decide what they want to use.

As I am in a colder, bitter climate I will have shelves, 2x4, and poles at differing heights for them to choose from. I am all about seeing what they like best. As long as it has open air and plenty of ventilation and an area protected from winds/ice/rain and clean, dry nest boxes.
