1yr old Rooster, 2 month old hens

Well, that one fell through. But I picked up a much better looking bird today. All black wattle/comb, bright eyes, feathered beautifully. At 10mos he's not much bigger than my two month old barred rocks, lol. A 3hr drive one way and $35...I think it was worth it.

He's currently hanging out in a medium dog crate in the coop. We didn't get home till much later than I anticipated, so I didn't have time to setup the bigger kennel.

Meet Johnny!
Not sure if it'll be Johnny 'Cash' or Johnny 'Rotten' lol.

To repost the RIGHT video:

He's settled into a decent sized jerk to them. The first night he was loose I had to put him in a cat carrier in the coop, because he wouldn't let the girls roost...pecking at them and running them off all three roosts. Sometime around 1am I went out and very quietly opened his carrier. When I opened the coop that next morning they were all roosted fine, and seem to be doing better in that aspect overall.

He still will chase any bird that catches his attention. If she's not fast enough she loses a feather. Even from across the run. 12' away he'll spy a random bird out of the group (they kind of cluster away from him sometimes), I'll watch him lock eyes on her, then he runs at her. The whole group explodes like bowling pins, and he struts off spitting a feather.

This is probably normal for a new rooster in a large group of pullets....but of course, I have no way of knowing.

I've also been trying to calm him. He's not 'aggressive' by any real stretch. He doesn't attack me at all...from any direction no matter where my attention is. He HATES being caught though. She never handled him. I've been catching him every day and holding him for 30-45 minutes. Today he fell asleep while I was holding him an scratching his neck lol. Problem is, catching him is a 15 minute ordeal sometimes...and scares the hell out of him. I don't know if it's doing more harm than good.

I'm half tempted to tie a string to the little _)(@#*@! to make him easier to catch lol.

They are not so rare anymore...fad started a few years ago, now they are everywhere.

I wanted them for a few reasons...partially looks, partially because black birds can help deter crows...and partially because chicks and eggs do still sell reasonably well. Same reason with the Ameraucana's...though they actually lay reasonably sized eggs lol, along with the colors.

But you're 150% correct. There's probably 10 ads for chicks, hatching eggs, and birds on my local craigslist (within 150 miles).
