I have 6 that hatched out yesterday put them in the brooder this morning, they have been fine all day, I just left the room for 30 min and came back and 2 are dead! Why? Anyone have any ideas what happened?

Sometimes just hatched chicks die with something wrong inside that a person just can't figure out the reason why. Are you sure you have them at the right temp in the brooder? They can chill very easily. 95 degrees right under the heat lamp with room to get away from the heat if needed. Chick starter/grower down on the paper towels or a feeder til they figure out the pecking of food and waterers also away from the heat source. Dip their beaks in the water to make sure they know where it is and how to drink. I keep marbles in my chick waterers so they won't drown for the first week or two by stumbling into it.

Can you give us a good description of your brooder? Maybe some pics? It's possible that something in their environment in the brooder is noxious to them, or you may just have weak chicks. Give us more info and hopefully we can help you out. In the meantime, you might want to take the rest of your chicks out of the brooder and put them in a box with a heat lamp or something.

Looks like TOH posted while I was typing. . . .
