Smartiepants! Buckeye Dave.

So they are your own hens eggs. That is even better! So how are you liking the Buckeyes? These are my first and I have high hopes for them.

What do you like the best and least about them? I want to be prepared!!

I gotta tell ya what I have been doing ...
Since I read Chris McCrary's (sp?) post about using higher protein feed ...
i started giving it to my Christmas hatch babies ... Delawares, BCMarans, and WFBSpanish. It has been about 10 days now. OMG... They are growing so much faster than my last batch! I thought I would try it for a couple weeks and see. I DO see a big difference!

At this point I still don't have my breeding pens sorted out. I do have one of Chris McCary's roos. He only has two hens at this time, but hopefully I will have a few of his chicks. I'm not too sure about this hatch, though, because of all the cold weather, and IT ISN'T TIME TO CANDLE YET, RUSTYWOMAN. One of the things I really like is the temperment of the hens. I never "petted" my chickens. I took care of them, but no extra attention or anything. They were brooded in the house for 4 weeks, then went out to a brooder in the coop. But they are very friendly, not demanding. I had one go broody already and she would give me the stink eye and fuss a little, but never tried to bite me or anything. And the carcasses are good. I've not had too many different kinds of chickens, but I can tell you they are much better than red star roos, and my orpingtons are still around because they just haven't filled out. Same feed, same care, at 18-24 weeks maybe 2/3 or less the weight. But then, my orpingtons are nowhere near the quality of my buckeyes, so that might not be a fair comparison. I would have liked for them to start laying earlier, but boy you should see the eggs. The information I got says medium eggs, but except for a few, I am getting big eggs, with a big dark yolk, and mine don't free range (hawks). Well, looks like I got diarrhea of the fingers here, so I'll shut up now and give someone else a chance.

Sorry I have been at work all day. I had 1 very small pip this morning and came home to two fluffy chicks. We ate dinner and then I had another chick. We ran to the store and came home to another chick. I have 4 more pipped and 4 with nothing yet. Day 21 started at 8pm so I have hopes for the last 4. You can watch my hatch cam here http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sekinkead

It's not the best quality as this is a borrowed web cam that is kinda old, but you can watch if you want.

Here are a couple of pics

sekinkead I just watched your web and I noticed the funniest thing. The reflection on the incubator glass you could see someone bending over looking through the glass. It just reminded me of how many hours we as a group have spent bent over looking through the glass of an incubator.I bet if we put those hours together combined it would be unreal.
