I had 7 chicks hatch out 3 days ago and they seemed fine. Came home today and found one sleeping in nest box and the rest out with mom. This chick peeps when you pick it up and wants to push against your hand when you put it over its head, but soon as it gets still it gets lethargic, and seems to be breathing heavy.I put some water on a q tip with elections in it and touched it to its beak and it wakes right up peeps and throws its head back drinking like normal, except after it swallows it begins to open and close its beak like it is gasping for air and lays its head all the way back. Then it goes right back to sleep still youthful it and it peeps like crazy then drops its head and goes to sleep. I done feel anything in its crawl and its legs and wings work fine, its just sickly acting. I am thinking. It is dehydrated and many throwing its head back after giving water is its way of trying to get

Sorry it posted b4 I fine shed . Was. Saying.....wonder if it is throwing head back is its way of saying it wants more or is this a symptom of its illness and if so what is wong

I don't know what the cause of that is. But you could try getting some electrolyte or vitamin water in her like Save A Chick.

Or hand feed water and some yogurt. I did this for a sick chick and it worked well. Give it lots of water and some food like yogurt if it won't eat. Could also be dehydrated.

Its been 7 hours now and no change. I have been giveing water with electylites but it will not eat. If i pick it up and shak it a little it wakes up and i drop crumbles of chick feed in front of it and it watches it fall and looks interested like it wants to eat it then after a few seconds its lights out.... maby it is narcoleptic, lol. But i am keeping it hydrated, when it peeps it sound perfectly normal, excited even, and when u cup it with your hand it peeps and pushes back against it like it is under its mothers wing but somthing is wrong with it. Breathing still labored but not constintly, comes and goes. Will stand up under your hand but soon as you move it the chick sets down and goes to sleep.

I'd feed it some yogurt just to get a little something more in her and hopefully boost her energy.

There's also some stuff you can put in the water to treat for illnesses. I forget what its called but if you ask TSC they will know what it is. It treats coici but I've heard people say they've had luck with it for respiratory illness.

If shes sniffly or snezzy it could be upper respiratory.

Other ways she may just be a sleepy chick. You might want to bring her in and make a small brooder out of a box with some shavings in it and a heat lamp. Take care of her in there if shes not with the mom much until she improves. Chicks that age do sleep a lot. Mine always nod off in random places every few min but all turned out great.

After that I really don't know.
